When I first joined the Mosaic Launch team, I was coming out of my “Invisibility Era”. I was finally ready to stop being someone who slipped in and out of Sunday services and start being slightly known. Over the past five or so years though, I’ve gone from knowing only two people here to being welcomed and accepted in multiple households. I could sit here and tell you it’s because of my hilarious tableside anecdotes or the fact that I’m always up for playing tag in the backyard, but honestly, it’s because I’ve been able to get to know families through serving alongside them.

This past Spring, I started a curiosity voyage, trying to figure out what community looks like in the season of singleness. Along the way, I picked up Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Life Together, where throughout, he discusses Biblical community, solitude, and life together. One portion, though, stood out. Serving together is part of life together and the building up of community. No matter skill or strength, everyone is needed in the building up of not only the church, but each other, coinciding perfectly with 1 Corinthians. The body needs each member to function properly. Each with their role, and each being uniquely made for that role.

At this point, I would convince you to serve because the Bible says so, AND IT DOES, but that’s not what I want to focus on. There are so many benefits to serving the body, both for you and the church. The one I’ve been able to experience the most though, and that has changed me, is the community gained through serving together. Singleness comes with moments of feeling alone, but through the community I’ve been able to build while serving, I’ve had a consistent, steady reminder that I’m not alone. Because of serving in Worship, I was welcomed with open arms into a family whose kids now call me “Aunt Alison.” Because of serving in Kids, I’ve been able to develop friendships that led to deeper connections in Christ. The community I surround myself with to this day, those relationships were built through serving together.

So, now’s the time to get out of your “Invisibility Era”. Jump in, feet first. It’s scary. Trust me, I know, but what you gain on the other side is more than you can ever imagine. How God can use you through service in His church will amaze you each week. How He’ll begin to work through you and with you will astonish you. All you have to do is take the first step, click the button, fill out the form, sign up. You’re not doing it alone. We serve together, in community.

In Christ,

Alison Baxter
